Green lost his IBO belt to American, Antonio Tarver in July but is back training hard to become another world champion. The loss to Tarver by TKO was Green’s first since losing to fellow Australia-Anthony Mundine in 2006.
There has been much discussion about how prepared Green’s opponent will be mentally after Polish outlets reported that an unconscious Wlodarczyk was taken to hospital after deliberately overdosing on tablets following an argument with his wife in July.
Green (31-4, 27 KO) was dominated by Tarver on July 20, dropping his lightly-regarded IBO title via stoppage after nine rounds. He was never truly in the fight save for a single round where his heavy hands did seem to bother Tarver, but other than that he was just thoroughly outboxed.
Wlodarczyk (45-2-1, 32 KO) was in negotiations recently to face fellow titlist Marco Huck, but those talks fell apart. The 29-year-old Pole has looked a bit off in recent fights against fringe contenders Jason Robinson and Francisco Palacios. Outside of a single fight in Italy, Wlodarczyk has not fought outside of Poland since 2005, and he’s fought away from his home country just four times in his career.

Krzysztof ‘Diablo’ Wlodarczyk is the man with the unpronounceable name, and although he might be unknown in Australia, Danny Green’s next opponent has an impressive pedigree.
The 30-year-old Pole, known as ‘Diablo’ and ‘Big Track’, is no pushover. With age, height and reach on his side, Wlodarczyk is going to be a tough adversary for Green.
His record is very good – 48 fights, 45 wins, 32 by knockout, two losses and one draw.
Wlodarczyk’s only losses have come against world champions – facing American Steve Cunningham in an IBF cruiserweight contest in 2007, and battling German Pavel Melkomyan back in 2003 for the WBA Inter-Continental cruiserweight title.
His only draw, in 2009, came against another world champion, Italian Giacobbe Fragomeni in Rome, who was the then WBC Cruiserweight champion. They had a rematch in 2010 in Poland and Wlodarczyk defeated him in eight rounds.
Wlodarczyk has never been knocked out.
Angelo Hyder, Green’s trainer, is not taking him lightly. I spoke with him for The Roar earlier this week.
Hyder has watched all of the Pole’s fights and says: “We know everything about him. He’s a two-time world champion. We rate him as the number one crusierweight in the world.
“He’s a big, strong, raw-boned bloke. It will be like releasing two pit bulls off the leash. It’s a monumental thing to take a world title off a champion. We’ve put it all on the line.”
And that is definitely the case.
Green’s last fight was a devastating loss to future Hall of Famer Antonio Tarver, which took a lot out of him. Another loss and Green’s career could be over.
The Green Machine is 38 years old and has already retired once and then made a comeback. A devoted family man, it’s unclear how many fights the West Australian has left in him, and the build-up to this fight hasn’t had the same profile or lustre that the tussle with Tarver had or other previous Green bouts.
Hyder explained that this was because “before Danny was under pressure to promote. Danny’s sacrifice is to win the fight first, he’s leaving the media to other people to promote the fight.”
Given the intensity that Green is showing, Hyder himself doesn’t know if this could be his last fight: “I’m not sure. He’s still loving what he does.”
Wlodarczyk clearly doesn’t have the same cache as Tarver, the star of the last Rocky film. But he’s no slouch either. Polish fighters are renowned for their toughness and determination, and ‘the Devil’ has won two world titles during his career. He’s also eight years younger than Green.
But, as has been mentioned elsewhere, Wlodarczyk does come into the bout with some questions over his mental state after he was rushed to hospital four months ago.
Hyder is expecting a “12 round war” with Wlodarczyk, and says the age difference is not an issue.
